What Hans Zimmer & Friends: Diamond in the Desert Is About
Paul Dugdale's 2025 concert film records a live performance of Hans Zimmer's best-known film scores, with music from Dune, Gladiator, Interstellar and The Lion King staged for orchestra and band. Interviews with Billie Eilish, Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, Finneas and Jerry Bruckheimer are placed between the pieces and carry concrete detail about how Zimmer works. Dugdale is experienced with concert films and it shows in the quality of the stage recording. The problem is the balance between concert and tribute: the interviews sometimes become a ceremony of praise, and the criticisms of Zimmer's music, the repeating structures and the textural approach, never come up. The stage built in the desert is visually impressive without any functional reason for being there. Who it's for: listeners of film music and viewers who enjoy large-scale concert recordings. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a documentary that looks critically at the composer's work, or who will find the tone of praise excessive.
