Shawn Mendes: Live in Concert

Directed by Paul Dugdale, this Netflix concert film records Shawn Mendes's show at the Rogers Centre in his hometown of Toronto. It was his first headlining stadium show and the largest concert of his career to that point, played to more than fifty thousand people. The hometown dimension matters: as a boy he had come to this stadium to watch games, and a few years earlier he had played it as an opening act. The show closed the North American leg of a world tour that drew over one point three million people across a hundred and five dates. The setlist runs through hits including Stitches, Treat You Better, In My Blood and Mercy, alongside covers of Whitney Houston and Coldplay, and Camila Cabello, whom he was dating at the time, joins him onstage for Señorita, one of the biggest hits of the year. It is worth noting this is not a documentary: Netflix released a documentary about Mendes called In Wonder the same month, while this is a straight recording of a single night. Who it's for: Shawn Mendes listeners and anyone who enjoys watching stadium shows at home. Who it's not for: Not for viewers wanting context about the artist's life or the music behind it, since the film never leaves the stage.
