What Knute Rockne All American Is About
Knute Rockne, a boy who emigrated from Norway to America, becomes first a player and then a coach at Notre Dame, and changes college football. The film tells his rise, the innovations he brought to the field and the relationship he built with his team. Directed by Lloyd Bacon, the film has Pat O'Brien as Rockne. But what carries the picture to today is something else: George Gipp, the player who falls ill, is played by a young Ronald Reagan, and a single line he speaks becomes a president's nickname forty years later. The telling is built as a celebration of a sporting legend and looks for no critical distance. Even so it is the best known American sports film of its period.
