What La Cucaracha Is About
In the middle of the Mexican Revolution, a relationship hardens between three people: a colonel, a widow, and a fearless woman soldier fighting in the ranks. All three are on the same side, but what is between them runs independently of the war and none of them will step back. The film uses the revolution as a background and is really about where power, jealousy and stubbornness take people. That Maria Felix and Dolores del Rio appear in the same film was treated as an event in itself in Mexican cinema. The two women here are not set beside the war as decoration; both of them carry weight inside it. Ismael Rodriguez’s ninety seven minute film was completed in 1959.
