What Nine Bachelors Is About
A new decree comes down in France: foreigners without papers are to be expelled. Jean Lécuyer hears of it and finds a way through. His idea is this: to supply husbands on paper to wealthy foreign women caught by the law. For that he opens a home for old bachelors and gathers nine men. They are poor and all past sixty. A fee is charged for each marriage and the money is split in two. Among the women are a Polish countess and a young American singer. The arrangement soon tangles in ways nobody planned. Sacha Guitry and Max Dearly take the leads in Guitry’s French film of 1939.
