What Royal Affairs in Versailles Is About
The film tells the story of the palace of Versailles: the small hunting lodge Louis XIII put up, its transformation under Louis XIV into the centre of an empire, the reigns of the two kings who followed, and finally the Revolution. After that the story is brought rapidly up to the present. Sacha Guitry's 1953 film narrates history as conversation rather than as a lesson, cutting in with his own voice to comment, and spares nothing of the kings' private lives or the gossip of the court. Every French star of the period passes through in a small part: Jean Marais, Gérard Philipe, Bourvil and many more. A hundred and sixty-seven crowded, enjoyable minutes of history.
