What Murderers and Thieves Is About
Philippe, settled comfortably in his flat, is thinking of killing himself. Just then a thief breaks into the house. Philippe catches the man and, instead of letting him go, makes him an offer: for a large sum of money he wants the thief to murder him. To talk him into it he starts recounting his own life. The more he tells, the more a past emerges that has already tied the two of them together. The film is built on talk and draws all its events out of the telling itself. Michel Serrault and Jean Poiret appear in Sacha Guitry’s eighty five minute French film, completed in 1956.
