What Désiré Is About

Odette Cléry hires a valet named Désiré, impeccable and stylish. She is the mistress of Félix Montignac, the minister of posts, telegraphs and telephones, and the house also holds Adèle the cook and Madeleine, madame’s maid. The summer holidays take the little group to a villa in Deauville. The trouble is that Désiré’s appearance, his self-assurance and the profession he has inherited through generations do not quite match his own tastes. At night the valet and his employer dream about each other and speak the dreams aloud. Sacha Guitry wrote it, directed it and plays Désiré, opposite Jacqueline Delubac, who was his wife. It was adapted from his own play, first staged at the Théâtre Édouard VII in 1927.
