What The Pearls of the Crown Is About
The historian Jean Martin tells his young wife the story of a necklace of seven pearls. Pope Clement VII gave them to Catherine de Medici a few months before her marriage to the future Henry II; four of them ended up on the crown of England, and three went missing. The film follows that trail from Henry VIII to 1937. Sacha Guitry wrote and directed it and played four separate parts, with Christian-Jaque as co-director. The dialogue runs in three languages, French, English and Italian. Guitry conceived the story after hearing that George VI would be crowned in May 1937, and had the film ready in time for the ceremony.
