What Nobody Lives Forever Is About
Jean Negulesco's noir opens with a con man coming back from the war. He returns to his old trade with a clear target: a wealthy, lonely widow to be charmed out of her money. The trouble is that he genuinely attaches himself to her halfway through the plan, and a trap once set is not easily dismantled. The film's interest is less in a conscience waking up than in what is supposed to happen afterwards, since his former partners have no intention of dropping the scheme. John Garfield carries the part with a tiredness that suits him, opposite Geraldine Fitzgerald, and Walter Brennan, as an ageing grifter, occupies the most human place in the film.
