What Nomos 4000 Is About

A law was passed in Greece in 1958. Its number was 4000. What it targeted was young men on the street. The punishments included having your head shaved. The young man was then paraded through the street. A sign around his neck said what he had done. The film takes its title from that law. Andreas Economou is in the story. Economou is a strict schoolteacher. His daughter Maria is his only child. Maria is in love with Giorgos, one of her father’s pupils. The relationship goes on in secret. Then something happens at the school. The relationship comes out and Maria becomes pregnant. She ends the pregnancy. Another pupil mocks the teacher in class. That boy is expelled and then made to face the punishment the law prescribes. Zoe Laskari and Vasilis Diamantopoulos appear in the ninety six minute film, a Greek production Giannis Dalianidis finished in 1962.
