One Piece: Clockwork Island Adventure

The crew's ship is stolen and Nami disappears with it. Luffy and the others follow the trail; the thieves live on Clockwork Island, a base built on top of an enormous mechanism. The island works like a clock: gears turn, platforms rise, and the structure moves as time passes. The subject is not treasure but the crew being unable to function a member short. The film says repeatedly that the group is a whole, and the fights are arranged around that idea; nobody wins alone. The form is built on the design of the space. The clockwork is both set and arena; the characters move among turning gears and the action comes out of the structure. The drawing is cleaner and the colour more saturated than the television episodes. It is the second One Piece feature and belongs to the series' early period; the crew is still small, the events do not attach to the canon and it runs under an hour. Compared with the later films the scale is markedly small. Junji Shimizu directs. Mayumi Tanaka voices Luffy and Akemi Okamura voices Nami. Who it is for: viewers who follow One Piece and like short adventure animation. Who it is not for: newcomers; the characters are not introduced and the relationships are assumed.
