What Robert et Robert Is About
In Claude Lelouch’s 1978 film two men sign up with a dating agency, and both of them are called Robert. Charles Denner plays a jumpy, hard-to-please taxi driver; Jacques Villeret plays a shy young man studying to become a policeman. Beyond the name they have nothing in common except that both are alone and both are waiting for a computer to find them somebody. While they wait for their arranged evenings, they become friends, and that friendship rather than either romance turns out to be the film Lelouch actually made. Villeret won the César for best supporting actor for it, Francis Lai wrote the music, and the whole thing is gentler than Lelouch’s reputation would suggest.
