The Auntie from Chicago

Charilaos, a retired officer, raises his four daughters under military discipline: their culture, their appearance and their behaviour are all supervised. He wants to see them married but never leaves any of them alone, so no man can get near. His wife Efterpi and his neighbour Xenophon try to talk him round, and he does not budge from the rule. Then a well-off relative who has been living in Chicago for years, Kalliopi, comes back to Athens. Directed by Alekos Sakellarios and produced by Finos Film, the comedy is among the most watched and most repeated films in Greek cinema. The aunt from America changes the household from top to bottom; the humour comes from the collision between Athens's closed middle-class morality and a freedom arriving from outside. Georgia Vasileiadou plays the aunt and carries the film on her own. The music is by Takis Morakis.
