What The Elementary School Is About
1945 into 1946, a small town outside Prague. Ten-year-old Eda and his friend Tonda are in a class so out of hand that the teacher gives up and leaves. The replacement, Igor Hnizdo, is a former soldier: strict, disciplined, and a hero to the boys because he tells war stories and shows them his pistol. He is a fair man, and his weakness is young women. Jan Svěrák's first feature; his father Zdeněk Svěrák wrote it and plays Eda's father. It is about childhood in a country where the war ended a few months ago, about the need for heroes, and about the lies adults tell. It was nominated for the foreign language Oscar in 1992.
