What The Great Caruso Is About
Enrico Caruso leaves Naples for the Metropolitan Opera with only one passion, which is singing. His lack of schooling and his poor background make him an outsider in the opera world at first, while his voice wins him both an audience and Dorothy; the refusal to stop performing eventually costs him his health. Richard Thorpe directed the MGM production, with Mario Lanza as the singer and Ann Blyth as his wife. It was loosely taken from Dorothy Caruso’s book, with many characters and incidents invented; the family sued MGM, won, and the film was pulled in Italy for a period. It was the highest-grossing film in the world in 1951.
