What The Punishment Is About
The year is 1919, at the end of the First World War. Manolache Preda, a Romanian peasant, returns to the village where he was born and finds that everything has changed: the woman he loves is with another man, and his land has been sold to the local landowner. There is no court to hear him and no door where his word will count; asking for what he lost back means entering a fight on his own. The film tells this emptiness that met those who came home from the war by holding a personal story and the question of land in the same place. Amza Pellea and Gheorghe Dinica appear in Sergiu Nicolaescu’s hundred and twelve minute Romanian film, completed in 1976.
