What Our Hope Is Şaban Is About
Şaban works as a tea boy in a coffee house in a small town, and everyone calls him Ringo Şaban. When he inherits a coffee house in Istanbul from his uncle, he sets off. Arriving in the city he runs straight into the neighbourhood the place stands in: developers want to knock it down and put up a block, and the residents are refusing to leave. Şaban picks a side and becomes the neighbourhood's only hope. Kartal Tibet directs, with Kemal Sunal in the lead. The familiar shape of 1970s Turkish comedy is at work here too: the guileless man up from the country, the machinery of profit he meets in the city, and an account the neighbourhood finally settles together.
