What Quadrille Is About
The young American actor Carl Erikson is in Paris on business and, while signing autographs, meets Paulette Nanteuil, the actress everyone in France is talking about; he does not know who she is, and she gives him the name of her friend the journalist Claudine André. Carl has an interview arranged with Philippe de Morannes, editor of Paris-Soir, who is also Paulette’s lover and who, by way of thanks, hands Carl a ticket to her show and so enlarges the trouble without knowing it. What follows is a knot with four ends: whom Paulette will choose, whether Philippe will turn to Claudine, and what happens if Claudine wants none of it. Sacha Guitry adapted the film from his own play, staged in Orléans on 21 September 1937. Guitry plays Philippe, Gaby Morlay plays Paulette and Jacqueline Delubac plays Claudine. It opened on 29 January 1938, and the dialogue carries all of its force.
