Romeo y Julieta

A taxi driver finds himself in front of a judge trying to explain a mess. By his account, after carrying two men in his cab he got mixed up in preventing Capuleto from marrying his daughter Julita to a pretentious stage actor. They pass him off as somebody else, and while Shakespeare's play is being staged again the driver ends up as Romeo without meaning to. Miguel M. Delgado directed it, and it is among the best known things Cantinflas did. The whole text is written in verse, but the lines end in Mexican street slang, and the comedy comes out of exactly that collision. Cantinflas's way of speaking is already built on sliding meaning around, so when it meets Shakespeare's stately language something else emerges. María Elena Marqués plays Julita.
