What The Good Bad-Man Is About
An outlaw who calls himself Passin’ Through breaks off from what are reckoned his evil ways long enough to help some children in difficulty. The film makes the contradiction in its title its direct subject: it tests how well the division between a good man and a bad one holds up inside a western. The account is gathered into fifty minutes and uses the fast construction of the silent period; chases, gesture and intertitles. The hero’s past forms the knot of the story, and goodness is shown not as a trait of character but as a choice. Douglas Fairbanks and Bessie Love appear in Allan Dwan’s fifty minute American film, completed in 1916.
