What The Reunion Is About
Two men from a group of old friends run into each other by chance in the streets of Milan after many years, decide to gather the scattered circle for one evening, and find the whole of the past piling up on them. Damiano Damiani’s hundred and ten minute film stages the reunion not as warm nostalgia but as a reckoning in which each of them sees exactly what he became and what he failed to become. The idea came straight out of the director’s own life, from a real friend who kept the group going with his pranks. Walter Chiari was free to improvise his lines as long as he warned the director before a take. Shot in black and white, the Italian French co-production competed at the Berlin Film Festival in 1963.
