What What a Wonderful Family! 2 Is About
The Hirata family has put the divorce crisis of a few years ago behind them, but the peace has not lasted long. Shuzo, the ageing father, insists on driving; his family thinks it is dangerous and he does not listen. One night he goes out for a drive with an old schoolmate. The next day they wake to something nobody expected. This is the second film in the series, directed by Yoji Yamada. Across a career of more than half a century Yamada has done the same thing: stand inside an ordinary Japanese family and listen. Death comes into the subject in this one, but the tone stays comic. Isao Hashizume plays the father and Yu Aoi the daughter-in-law. The telling makes old age neither a tragedy nor a joke.
