Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Tsuzumi Mansion Arc

Tanjiro enters a mansion in which the connections between rooms keep changing. There is a drum inside; at every beat a room rotates, a corridor moves, people are flung somewhere else. The demon who owns the house rearranges the space by striking his drums. The subject is not the fight but the demon himself. Kyogai was once a writer, and the fact that his writing was dismissed still wounds him; the single sentence of praise Tanjiro gives him is one of the strangest and most affecting moments in the series. This is also where Zenitsu and Inosuke settle into the ensemble. Zenitsu only being able to fight once he has fainted from fear, and Inosuke's boar mask, both acquire their meaning here. The form depends on these television episodes having been animated at cinema scale; the rotating rooms are built in computer animation and the camera turns with them. This is not a separate production: it joins the relevant episodes with new footage and special end credits, and screened in Japan in 2022. Haruo Sotozaki directs. Who it is for: viewers who know the series and want this stretch in one sitting. Who it is not for: anyone starting here; being a recap, the transitions are cramped and the characters are not introduced.
