Digimon Adventure tri. Part 4: Loss

The fourth of the six parts of Digimon Adventure tri. delivers exactly what its title promises. Returning to the Digital World after its reboot, the children face both a new enemy and partners who no longer remember them. Sora's story is at the centre: Biyomon's indifference toward her shows what it means for a bond built over years to become one-sided. The idea the series has carried throughout, that childhood friendships do not simply continue on their own as you grow, surfaces here at its plainest. The telling is slow and emotional, with action in second place. The effect is markedly stronger for anyone who watched the original Digimon series. Who it's for: viewers who grew up with Digimon and follow continuation stories. Who it's not for: anyone new to the series; the film explains neither its characters nor their history.
