What Suez Is About
Disappointed in love, the young Ferdinand de Lesseps is sent as a junior diplomat to the Isthmus of Suez, and there he sees that a canal joining two seas could be built. What follows is both a piece of engineering in the desert and a passage through the politics between Paris and London; the man has to find the money and to deal with the accusations aimed at him. Allan Dwan’s hundred and four minute American film used history very freely; after its release in France the descendants of de Lesseps brought a libel action and lost, because the film showed him going to Egypt as a young man and having an affair with the Empress Eugénie. Tyrone Power, Loretta Young and Annabella appear; it opened on 28 October 1938 and was nominated for three Academy Awards.
