What One Day with the Devil Is About
One of the Cantinflas pictures that Mexican cinema is remembered for. A newspaper seller wakes from a drunken night to find he has joined the army, and before long he is in the next world, standing in front of the Devil, who sets about turning him into something wicked. Against Cantinflas's torrent of words the Devil does not stand much chance. Miguel M. Delgado directs; he made dozens of films with Cantinflas, and this comes from their most productive stretch. The whole act is verbal: a man who talks constantly and says nothing, one of the most recognisable figures in Mexican cinema. Made in 1945, it carries the air of the country's golden age.
